Video Game Timeline: A 2-Minute Crash History Course

It's a great divide. Many of our readers watched as video games were born and developed to this day. Others never knew a world without friends lists and Live accounts. Regardless of your background, this timeline will catch you up.
A number of notables are missing, from 3DO to the Jaguar to even the infamous Virtual Boy. But you should gain some perspective all the same while we wait for the inevitable Failed Video Game Timeline follow-up.

New Iron Man 2 Poster Reveals Villain Whiplash (Mickey Rourke)

PS3 Portable... Literally

Nothing says "extreme" quite like wrist-guards... and knee pads... and elbow pads... and a PS3 Slim backpack. Epson combined all that and more to create its vision of an "extreme gamer," a Ghostbusters cast-off with a gaming console on his back and an EH-TW450 projector on his chest used to splay Need for Speed: Shift on the walls of buildings, the ceilings of clubs, and the interiors of wind-tunnels. It's exciting stuff, shown in the video below. Why this projector out of all the company offers? We're not entirely sure. It's a 3LCD 720p model with a 3000:1 contrast ratio and a single one watt speaker that probably couldn't overcome the din of all the road traffic this extremophile was dodging. If you want in on this kind of action expect to pay about $1,000 -- for the projector. You're on your own for the rest of the kit. Loss of self-respect? That comes for free.

This Is Big

Sony's PlayStation marks 15th anniversary

1994. A good year for many reasons, but for gamers it's best remembered as the year Sony shook things up in a big way with its original PlayStation game console (on this day in Japan, at least -- the rest of us had to wait 'til the fall of 1995). While Sega got a slight head start with its Saturn, the Sony PlayStation's lower price and strong launch line-up of games quickly vaulted it to the top of the pack, and helped bring in the slightly older audience that 3D0 and others tried and failed to capture. Of course, the original PlayStation was also just the beginning for Sony, and the company has taken this opportunity to reminisce a bit about the entire history of the PlayStation brand on a special 15th anniversary website (Link).

First Iron Man 2 Poster: Ker-Boom

Ho. Lee. Crap. The first (real) teaser trailer's coming in December, but after seeing this poster, I don't know if I can't wait that long. And yes, I know tomorrow is December.

We <3 Bacon

Yes... Here at d0peNERD we love bacon... there is nothing in the world bacon cant make better.

P.S. LV Bacon says we need to talk lol

Bacon of the Month Club

Yes, you read that right. The Bacon of the Month Club ($225) is the perfect gift for the pork-lover in your life. Along with a different artisan bacon delivered every month, members also get discounts on Grateful Palate products, a membership card, a ballpoint pen, a rubber toy pig, a t-shirt, and a monthly bacon comic strip. If your recipient is a real hog, you can spring for the $310 membership that sends double the bacon their way. Oink oink.

Bacon Jam

If your stockpile of Baconnaise is running low, add some Bacon Jam ($17) to your bacon shopping list. (Because by now you should have one list just for bacon items and one list for food.) Bacon Jam is pure spreadable heaven. Works great on burgers, texas toast, and any sandwich that needs some lovin'.

Tactical Canned Bacon

Whether it's a hurricane, blizzard, or zombie uprising that's left you shut in, you can still get your daily dose of pork with Tactical Canned Bacon ($16). Each can holds about 50 slices of tasty pre-cooked bacon, and has a shelf life of more than ten years, or way longer than you'll be able to hold off on eating it.

Bacon Salt

Because everything should taste like bacon, there's Bacon Salt ($5). Available in three tasty flavors — Original, Hickory and Peppered — Bacon Salt is a zero calorie, zero fat, vegetarian and kosher seasoning salt that tastes just like real bacon. It's pretty wonderful on just about anything you can think of — we honestly didn't have one bad experience of bacon overload. (OK, so the Hickory no-bake cookies could have been better.) For extra healthiness, there's Natural flavor, which is also gluten free and has low sodium. Bacon in a bottle. It doesn't get much better than that.

Baconnaise

From the maker of Bacon Salt comes Baconnaise ($15/3 pack). This bacon flavored spread is tasty on everything from sandwiches to celery. Spread the bacon love.

Bacon Pop

Getting ready for movie night at home? You may not be able to beat the local cineplex's huge screen or THX-certified sound system, but you can best them on drinks and snacks, starting with Bacon Pop ($12/3 boxes). From the same great minds that brought you Baconnaise and Bacon Salt comes this microwaveable bacon-flavored popcorn, with just the right hint of butter and outstanding real bacon taste. Grab your favorite beer, sit down in your own recliner, and enjoy.

Another One

Macbook decals appear to be turning into a trend as even pirates are getting into the game. Arrr, yo-ho-ho matey, or something like that.

So d0pe!

Like that Snow White Macbook cover, I love how this Minifig interacts with the logo, instead of just covering it. MacSlap's shop on Etsy says it's sold-out right now—maybe enough interest would inspire more.

Verizon/Motorola/Google Droid

Who would have thought that the hot new Android device of the month would come from previously dead-in-the-water Motorola? The Motorola Droid ($200; November 6) is Verizon's newest iPhone competitor, and the star (if you can call it that) of its new iDon't advertising campaign. Apart from being the first device to debut running Android 2.0 -- complete with the all-new Google Maps Navigation -- the Droid is rocking some seriously nice specs, including an ARM Cortex A8 processor, a 3.7-inch, 480x854 touch screen, a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, Bluetooth, GPS, a slide-out keyboard, an included 16GB SD card, and more.

I'm Good Remix

I Am Not A Fanboy!!!

As tiresome as the Droid vs iPhone arguments are lately, I'm happy to have finally found something to sum up my feelings on the issue. Doesn't hurt that it has a Star Wars reference either.

I Be Au Sm T-Shirt

NES. Xbox 360. Aliens. Robots. USB. Test tubes. Protractors. If it's geeky, you can bet you'll find it hidden in the I Be Au Sm T-Shirt ($18). Printed in white on a black American Apparel tee, this ode to geekiness has all sorts of meme-tastic icons and illustrations hidden within its four letter outlines, guaranteeing to bring others closer to you, if only for long enough to deduce that you probably don't get out much.

Nook

I'm not a fan of e-book readers but with Amazon on its second iteration of Kindle, you knew brick and mortar stalwarts Barnes & Noble weren't going to just let them take over the electronic book market. Hence, Nook ($260). Built atop Android and featuring dual screens — one e-Ink, one color touch screen — Nook aims to present books and their covers to you in a whole new, but familiar, way. Like the Kindle, it features built-in 3G wireless networking, storage for up to 1,500 books, and a sleeker design than Amazon's front-keyboard gadget. The icing on the cake? There are thousands of books available for free, making the two and some change price tag seem that much friendlier.

The Horde T-Shirt

Just in time for undeadliest of holidays comes The Horde T-Shirt ($18). This black American Apparel tee sports a terrific print of a single character wielding multiple weapons on the roof of a car as a horde (get it?) of zombies surround him. While it won't pass as a costume per se, it's certainly festive, and if you happen to harbor a secret zombie obsession, you'll no doubt find yourself wearing it all year long

iPhone For Halloween Much???

Powered by a car battery and full-size 42-inch LCD TVs, these working iPhone Halloween costumes from Apple costume savants "Reko and Bobby" are surely iPhone fanaticism manifested in physical form. Amazingly, this is not the first time the duo has created human sized iPhone costumes. In 2007, the two created smaller and simpler versions with 37-in. screens that could only display looped videos of real iPhone screens in use... This year, however, shit got real...

Two grand for one night of incredibly geeky fun. Did I mention each of these weigh 85 pounds??? I'll Pass...

Tiesto & Sneaky Sound System "I Will Be Here"

Cool Robot Dude In Video

Shwood Sunglasses

Forget simulated wood grain — Shwood Sunglasses ($95) are handcrafted from actual wood. They're available in two basic styles, the Wayfarer-like Canby and the more squarish Govy, and can be ordered in a variety of different woods, all with your choice of Carl Zeiss lenses. Just remember: these probably aren't the best shades to wear to the beach, water park, or campfire — we're guessing they're at least a little flammable.

Heritage Toggle Coat

Take a step back in time with the Heritage Toggle Coat ($355). Made from a wool and nylon blend, this long coat features a four toggle closure for a old-time nautical look, three exterior pockets, two interior pockets, adjustable button cuffs, and more. Available in tannish "Camel" or black, we'd recommend sticking with the former unless you really want to draw attention to those light tan toggles.

Amazon.com Local Express Delivery

As much as we love Amazon and our Amazon Prime accounts, we still miss the instant gratification that comes from purchasing goods in a brick-and-mortar store and having them with you when you get home. Amazon.com Local Express Delivery ($6 and up, per item) aims to lessen this gap by offering same-day delivery for orders placed before a certain time in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Las Vegas, and Seattle. Great news for procrastinators and the impatient, bad news for the ol' charge card.

Converse Jack Purcell Race Around

A pair of relatively plain black sneakers are a great staple for any man's wardrobe, the Converse Jack Purcell Race Around ($79) being a fine example. These subdued high-tops feature a leather upper and lining, nubuck side panels with perforation details, a contrasting white ring on the sides of the rubber sole, and a molded footbed for added comfort. Just don't wear them with shorts.

Nissan 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition

Celebrating the October, 1969 launch of the Datsun 240Z, the new Nissan 370Z 40th Anniversary Edition ($TBA; Spring 2010) thankfully moves beyond the quaint 150hp 2.4-liter engine of the original for Nissan's latest and greatest tech. Features include a 332 hp V6 — sadly, not enhanced with turbo for this edition — 19-inch, "smoke" Rays wheels, a special 40th Quartz paint job, red brake calipers, red leather interior, red stitching, and the requisite 40th anniversary badges and commemorative plaque.

Apple 21.5 & 27-inch iMac

While it's a little hard to tell from the front, the new Apple iMac ($1,200 - $2,000) has changed a lot from its predecessor. Available with either a 21.5- or 27-inch 16:9, glass-covered LED backlit display, a fully aluminum back panel, 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors standard with quad-core 2.66GHz Core i5 or 2.8GHz Core i7 processors as options, a built-in SD card slot, up to 16GB of RAM, an included Apple Wireless Keyboard and new multi-touch Magic Mouse, and more. The only bummer? You'll be waiting (with us) until November if you want a Core i5 or i7 model.

Apple Unibody MacBook

It's about time. Apple finally updated its long-in-the-tooth non-aluminum laptop today with the release of the new MacBook ($1,000). Bringing it up to speed with its Pro counterparts, the new base-level MacBook features a polycarbonate unibody design with a non-skid bottom surface, an LED-backlit 13.3-inch display, a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDIA 9400M graphics, Apple's latest built-in battery technology for up to seven hours of battery life, and a glass multi-touch trackpad. Sadly, there's no black option this time around.

Apple Magic Mouse

Who needs buttons? Apple's Magic Mouse ($69) eschews mechanical buttons and scroll wheels, letting you navigate using the same Multi-Touch technology used on the iPhone and MacBook trackpads. The sexy, seamless, touch-sensitive device works as a single or multi-button mouse with advanced gesture support, allowing you to scroll, pan, or swipe with ninja-finger skill. Works for you freakish lefties too.

Blasphemy... But So Damn Cool

JESUS2000 from jesus 2000 on Vimeo.

iPhone Springboard Exposé

The designers also have an idea for managing the mess of home screens that comes along with app hoarding. Tapping the home button would bring up a paneled Exposé page. From there, you could easily jump to a specific page, rather than swiping a hundred times to find Peggle.

Now This is How the iPhone Should Handle Multitasking

I really hope someone at Apple sees these concept interfaces from Ocean Observations. They've taken the best elements of the Pre's card system, combined them with Cover Flow, and created an awesome vision of multitasking on the iPhone.

100 Greatest Moment In YouTube History

Nike Dunk Hi AC Tier Zero

The last two Dunk styles we showed you are nearly impossible to obtain (see Gucci, DQM x Nike Dunk Unreleased Sample). In the same manner, the two subtle colorways of the Nike Dunk Hi AC may be difficult to come across as well. With that said, both colorways will release tomorrow, September 26th, 2009 at select retailers such as Undefeated.
Both pairs will feature a 100% canvas base combined with a white sole. One pair will come in an all-grey colorway, while the other pair owns an all-black color scheme. Is this the best Dunk release of 2009?
